Aztec Indian women at a public well, Vera cruz.
About three miles to the southeast of Cordoba, is the little Aztec Indian village of Amatlan. the tribe of Indians living here are very friendly but they hace their own laws, traditions and language, of which they are very jealous, refusing to speak or understand Castilian.
The Aztec was the highly civilized and cultured race that Cortes and his soldiers found in Mexico long before the Pilgrims came to America. Their Emperor, Montezuma, lived in great splendor, in a beautiful palace, but the Aztecs were pagans and worshipped their stone deities. In their every-day life they were kindhearted, but in their religion, they made thousands of humans sacrifices, tearing out the living hearts, and holding them up to their jewel-studded gods.
Very little is known of the inhabitants of Mexico before the Aztecs, but proofs have been found that there were many tribes, some of wich were quite civilized. Probably no other American race was so rich in objects of art as were the Aztecs at the time of the conquest. While cuntless specimens of their art have been saved, a great many more have been destroyed.
Thousands of descendants of the Aztecs still live in Mexico. Many have completely forgotten their ancient arts and manner of life and in every way are thoroughly Latin-Americans, but some have retained many of their customs and lenguage and even their dress, as have the people of Amatlan.
They are no longer pagans, but to all appearances are Christians, devoutly attending the Catholic Church. These women are quaint and attractive with their loose flowing robes of the white cotton, ornamented with colored braid and small silver trinkets.
